How to install
Clear the area
Remove any existing weeds from around your tree or plant, and loosen the topsoil slightly for better moisture contact.
Slide it over the plant
Use the pre-cut centre slit on squares, or the hole on circles, to slide the mat around the base of your plant. No cutting needed.
Stake it in place
The 12″, 16″ and 18″ squares have two stake holes. Hammer a 6″ biodegradable wooden stake through each, in diagonal corners, so the mat sits firmly against the soil.
Soak it through
Water the mat thoroughly after laying it. A saturated mat beds down against the soil and starts holding moisture straight away.

Two 6″ biodegradable stakes per square mat, hammered through the pre-cut stake holes in diagonal corners. Sold separately in cases of 250, 500 and 1000.
Square or circle?
Both are the same 1000 gsm mat. It comes down to what you're covering.
Square
Suits garden beds, rows of plants and rectangular borders. Sits neatly edge to edge when you're covering a run.
Circle
Best for single trees and standalone shrubs, sitting flush all the way around the trunk.

What are the mulch mats made of?
Canadian hemp fibre grown by Alberta farmers, needle-punched onto a biodegradable pulp backing. 40% of the backing is post-consumer recycled material. No synthetic binders and no chemicals.
How long do they last in the garden?
Three to four years in typical garden conditions, decomposing fully in 36 to 48 months. There's no cleanup; leave them in place and they enrich the soil as they break down.
Square or circle, which should I choose?
Both work equally well. Circles sit flush all the way around a single tree. Squares suit garden beds and rows of plants. Both come pre-cut with a slit to the centre.
Which size do I need?
Match the mat to the mature spread of the plant's root zone rather than the plant today. 12″ suits seedlings and small perennials, 16″ and 18″ suit shrubs and young trees, and 24″ suits established trees.
Can they be cut to a custom size?
Yes, all TerraFibre mats can be trimmed, though hemp fibre will dull scissors quickly. A fabric cutter with a sharpening wheel works best. Custom bulk sizes are available on request.
Do I need wooden stakes?
The 12″, 16″ and 18″ squares have two stake holes, and two stakes hammered into diagonal corners hold the mat firmly in place. In calm conditions the mat will sit flat on its own, but staking is worth it in windy spots and on slopes. Our Wooden Bio Stakes are 6″ and biodegradable, sold separately in cases of 250, 500 and 1000.
Are they safe around vegetables and edibles?
Yes. No chemicals, no synthetic binders and no plastic, so they're safe around edible plants, vegetables and food gardens.
Can I use them over winter?
Yes. They're well suited to fall and winter bed protection, insulating the soil, suppressing weeds and holding moisture through the cold months.
