How to use
Instructions
From roll to harvest in seven steps.

Cut to length
Roll out the length you need and cut it with a rotary or powered fabric cutter. Hemp fibre will dull ordinary scissors quickly.

Pre-soak
Pre-soak your seeds if the seed directions recommend it, typically 6 to 8 hours.

Place seeds
Put the mat in a grow tray fibre side up and sprinkle seeds evenly at the recommended rate. Wet with pH neutral water until the mat is saturated but not sitting in water.

Stack trays
Stack the trays or use a humidity dome to encourage high germination and strong rooting. Keep them dark for the first one to four days, depending on the seed.

Light
Place the mat under a grow light or in direct sunlight for roughly 8 to 10 hours a day.

Keep humid
Keep the mat saturated by spraying once or twice a day.

Harvest
When it's ready, cut the crop with scissors. Leave the greens in the mat until you eat them and they'll keep longer.

How many trays does one roll cover?
A 10″ × 120′ roll is 1,440 inches long. At 20 inches per standard 1020 tray that's about 72 trays, before any trim waste.
What's the best way to cut the roll?
Hemp fibre is tough and will dull ordinary scissors quickly. We use a mechanised fabric cutter with a sharpening wheel. A rotary cutter and mat also works well for smaller runs.
How should I store a partly used roll?
Keep it somewhere dry and off the floor, ideally bagged or wrapped so it stays clean. Dry hemp fibre stores well, but damp storage can lead to mould before you ever seed it.
What are the grow mats made of?
TerraFibre grow mats are made from Canadian-grown hemp fibre, sourced from local farmers across Alberta. The fibre is separated, cleaned and processed into a 100% biodegradable soilless growing medium. The white backing is biodegradable cellulose.
How much water and light do the mats need?
It depends on your growing environment, since every greenhouse and grow room has different humidity. We recommend spritzing once or twice a day as the mat needs it. For the first three days, stack the trays and keep the seeds dark. After that, around 8 to 10 hours of light and plenty of water will encourage strong germination and growth.
Do I need to soak my seeds first?
We recommend soaking seeds for roughly 6 to 8 hours before sprinkling them across the mat. Check the seed packet for the time your variety needs.
Do the mats replace soil completely, or do they need nutrients?
Plain tap water will do the job, assuming the pH isn't extreme. The mats need watering once or twice a day along with roughly 8 hours of light. Seeds carry enough nutrients to take them through the full microgreen lifecycle.
Does water pH affect germination?
Yes. If your tap water isn't close to neutral, around 7.0, you may have trouble germinating seeds or growing healthy seedlings. Test your tap water before use, and if it falls outside the ideal range, use pH-adjusted or filtered water.
Can all seeds be grown on the mats?
All microgreen seeds can be grown on our mats. If you're switching from another medium, run some trials to find what works for you, since growing techniques vary by region. Other seeds such as flowers will germinate, but once they pass the true leaf stage they'll need nutrients and will likely need transplanting into a larger container.
Can the mats be cut to fit different trays?
Yes, though hemp fibre will dull your scissors quickly. The mats cut easily to fit various tray sizes. We use a mechanised fabric cutter with a sharpening wheel, which works well for regular cutting.
Do I need to prepare the mat before use?
No. Open the packet, pull out a mat and place it in your grow tray. Give it a good first watering so the hemp is completely saturated, with no standing water visible over the mat.
Are the mats single use?
They're designed for single use, which is why we made them fully biodegradable and compostable. After harvest, the mat and roots go into your compost or garden beds.
How thick are the mats?
The mats sold online are 300 gsm. If you need thicker mats such as 500 gsm or 750 gsm, contact us and we can have them custom made.
What sizes are available?
TerraFibre hemp grow mats come in 5″ × 5″, 10″ × 20″ and a 10″ × 120′ roll. Bulk and custom sizes are available on request, just reach out to our team.
