2” Growing Cubes

Each 2″ cube is the perfect receptacle for a single seed – Use them for sprouts, microgreens, or any other seedling starts. They’ll retain moisture and provide the ideal material for root development. When ready for potting on or transplanting into the garden bed, the hemp fibre is 100% biodegradable, and will break down to nothing in the soil. Each sheet is cut so that the cubes are attached but easily separated. Each cube is perforated with a seed hole for simple planting. Great alternative for hydroponic media.

Q – What are the Growing Cubes used for?
    A –
The Terrafibre Hemp Growing Cubes are an all natural growing media for starting seeds or transplanting cuttings.

Q – What are the Growing Cubes made of?
A – Terrafibre Growing Cubes combine two parts of the industrial hemp plant to provide an ideal growing environment. Bast fibres are high in water holding capacity and provide the strength for roots to attach to. Hurd is the larger “woody” fibres that increase air porosity in the cube. We use a starch-based binder to hold it all together.

Q – Can the Grow Cubes be used in a net cup like rockwool in a hydroponic set-up?
A – Yes it can! We designed it to be a environmentally friendly replacement for rockwool. In a hydroponic setup, be sure to have appropriate filtering as there is a small amount of fibre that can come off the cube, and you’ll want to capture it so it doesn’t clog up your pumps.

Q – I usually use Rockwool or coconut coir for my cubes. Do these perform the same way?
A – Yes, the growing cubes are a sustainable alternative to rockwool, peat moss, or coconut.

Q – How long does it take for the growing cubes to break down?
A – Our growing cubes are completely biodegradable and compostable. Hemp fibre is an incredibly strong fibre so will take 1-2 years to break down completely. Even if it hasn’t fully broken down yet, add it to your soil to help break up packed dirt and increase water absorption.

Q – What sizes are the Growing Cubes available in?
A – Currently we have 1.5 inch cubes available. Come this fall we will have available our 2” cubes, 4” block, 40” slab, and loose fill (1cm crutons).

Q – What is the benefit of using Hemp?
A – Hemp is an all natural fibre that encourages healthy growth for seedlings and transplanting. Hemp is primarily farmed for its seed and usually the stalk/fibre is traditionally wasted. We upcycle the fibres to create a truly sustainable growing media. Hemp fibres have a high water holding capacity, and insulation properties. This creates a warm and moist environment to grow. The water holding capacity keeps seeds wet during germination and growth. Unlike other products like rockwool, hemp is 100% biodegradable, which means used cubes can be composted.

Q – Can they be transplanted into other hemp products?
A – Yes! We are currently developing a 4 inch block, a slab and loose fill to be used for transplanting purposes. You will be able to transplant the starter cubes into these products.
